Hertogenbosch, Netherlands

The city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, or Den Bosch as it is called by the locals, was founded in 1185 and literally means ‘the duke’s forest’ – a reference to the medieval castle and woodland that dominated this charming little town back then.

Thorn (Holland)

Thorn is the white painted village and capital of a tiny principality for more than 800 years. It was an abbey ruled by the noble ladies of the Thorn Convent. With the invasion by the French in 1794 it was all over. But the village is still charming.

Most of the buildings are white painted, but not the church. The abbey, dated back to 1285, is a gothic cross-basilica, with a baroque interior.
